You do NOT need a Power Adapter. It runs off the iPad's power via USB digital connection. The same is true of the Apogee or Line 6. What the IRig HD gives you is an EXTRA feature of Mic input and thusly adds a battery compartment for 'Phantom Power' for better performance.
If you never use mic, then you don't need to put batteries in it as it's solely powered by the iPad, just like the Apogee and Line 6. I own the older recently discontinued HD Pro. It doesn't need a power adapter. It comes with a battery for phantom power for mics. That's a 5. rated unit on the shopping websites.
Some of the much cheaper analog iRigs have non-digital connections - a totally different animal and rated accordingly. Apogee is good but has less features and is pricier for what you get feature/specs-wise. Line 6 is a solid unit but not as good as the iRig HD. Check out the spec/feature sheet of all devices and compare. I've been using the Ipad Air with the HD Pro for 2 years now and it has been 100% solid, as its 5. reviews suggest. Never and issue and crystal clear quality.
The older Apogee would be my #2, but again, feature/spec wise it ain't there for its price. Plus the newer iRigs have the inputs/cabling to deal with the newer iPhones (i.e. 7, etc) that don't have a headphone out.Apogee doesn't have a Midi input, phantom power mic OR headphone out that the iRig has.
If you ever get a better iPhone or iPad that doesn't have a headphone out, your older un-upgraded Apogee unit will be SOOL. Here's the cheaper newer release $99 digital version of the Pro that gives you 96k (which ain't necessary!), tons of connection possibilities, and the full version of Amplitube 4 app for Free. The newly released $150 Unit (these units run on batteries for Phantom mic power which is a feauture the Apogee doesn't have-but it runs on NO batteries when just plugging it into the iPadd. Your iPad powers ANY of these digital devices up of any make/model via USB into iPad): Musician's Friend and Guitar Center are running 15% and 17% coupons during these Holidays, so I'd call and ask for a discount on any device you're seeking.
All such digital devices will get you there. It's just is a matter of what you get feature/spec wise for your money-iRigs win here and it ain't even close.
Apogee Mic For Iphone
And Apogee is inconveniently outdated for the new Apple stuff and desperately needs a product refresh.
