It is not always easy to decide in which journal to publish your research results. Information is usually scattered on the web. I therefore created this list to make this a little bit easier. Only peer-reviewed journals are listed. They are ordered by their impact factors and CiteScore Index on popular demand, but beware of the problems with these metrics. Note, that these factors have been rounded here and can be found in more details on, and websites.

In the list journals are grouped into open and restricted journals Journals are here considered only as here, when all articles are freely available (excluding journals which allow open access for some articles with special fees, subscriptions or embargos on access). We also added which journals allow posting pre-prints and post-prints (category 1 - green), only post-prints (category 2 - blue), only pre-prints (category 3 - yellow) and no archiving (category 4 - white) as well as those which remain ungraded in (category 5 - ungraded).
Note, that some journals do not allow any archiving of preprints or postprints (so-called white journals in this database). The table also lists if a publication fee applies to publish an article (as listed on DOAJ): some open access journals have high publication fees. Note, that journals with very irregular publishing and/or which are considered predatory are not listed here. Some multidisciplinary science journals, which occasionally future paleontological articles, are listed for comparison. Paleontological Journal (Paleontologicheskii zhurnal) is the principal Russian periodical in paleontology. The journal publishes original work on the anatomy, morphology, and taxonomy of fossil organisms, as well as their distribution, ecology, and origin. It also publishes studies on the evolution of organisms, ecosystems, and the biosphere and provides invaluable information on global biostratigraphy with an emphasis on Eastern Europe and Asia.PEER REVIEW Paleontological Journal is a peer reviewed journal. We use a single blind peer review format. Our team of reviewers includes over 50 reviewers, both internal and external (65%), from many countries (Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, USA,Italy, Poland, Czech Republic, China, etc.). The average period from submission to first decision in 2017 was 30 days, and that from first decision to acceptance was 30 days. The final decision on the acceptance of an article for publication is made by the Editorial Board.
Any invited reviewer who feels unqualified or unable to review the manuscript due to the conflict of interests should promptly notify the editors and decline the invitation. Reviewers should formulate their statements clearly in a sound and reasoned way so that authors can use reviewer’s arguments to improve the manuscript. Personal criticism of the authors must be avoided. Reviewers should indicate in a review (i) any relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors, (ii) anything that has been reported in previous publications and not given appropriate reference or citation, (ii) any substantial similarity or overlap with any other manuscript (published or unpublished) of which they have personal knowledge.
