After upgrading to 10.5.6 (via the Combo Updater), when I run the iRiver Music Manager ( ) software running, and plug in my iRiver ifp-899 MP3 player via USB, I get an immediate kernel panic. Very repeatable. I submitted a bug report ( ). Anyone encounter this problem? Any workarounds? Anyone have experience using the open source IFP driver under OS X ( )? Thinking about this since last night - I haven't tried the opensource driver mentioned in Jaime's post - and since it hasn't been worked on for some time - I'm not sure it is worth the effort.
However, I still want to use this player so I believe the best course is to change to the UMS version of the firmware and just use it as direct USB device. The main objection I see on the discussions on the net are that the recording funtion in that mode is extremely limited. I don't use it for recording, so it isn't an issue. Other than that - it would continue to operate as an MP3 player. It will require me to drag out my old Windows laptop - the Music Manager program is what is used to change the firmware. But, at this point, the player is unusable and frankly - I think we're too small a community for anyone to care about our problem any time soon.

Short answer - yes. That is exactly what I did - I have always used mine with my Mac. You also need to download the version of the UMS firmware that is appropriate for your player. I have an iFP 895 so I used the version that I found here The discussion thread on this site is also useful. Whatever you do, avoid the endless 'driver' sites that often just get you into spam and other scams you don't want. I found the same version on the iRiver site more than a year ago, but I don't see it now. If you search for the UMS firmware for your player by name you should be able to find it.
